Pros: Special teams experience on the kick coverage, punt return, punt coverage, and field goal block units, multiple blocked field goals, ideal combination of size and length, good but not elite speed, smooth hips, press punches re-route receivers, poised footwork in press, patient in soft-shoe press, drives outside releases into the sideline, sudden transition from press to half-turn, quick feet at the top of the stem, quickly decelerates to remain sticky on comebacks and curls, plays aggressive to allow minimal separation at all times, reads the QB’s eyes to jump routes, quick to close on posts and in-breakers from off-man, quick to recognize and drive on short routes from zone and off-man, easily handles switch releases in zone, drops in zone to pick up deep crossers, boxes out receivers at the catch point, nice vertical, defends a large radius at the catch point, identifies ball and rakes receiver’s hands late, willing run defender, powerful tackler, motor runs hot, long arms to stack and shed blocks, attacks blocker’s hands, pulls blockers forward and off balance, swim move vs. blockers
Cons: Penalized six times in 2023, inconsistent competition level, high-cut frame, not the twitchiest or most sudden athlete, press whiffs, accuracy in press needs improvement, lacks elite downfield speed, some instances of being stacked, some separation allowed at stem’s peak, some grabbiness on comebacks, hand fighting downfield might draw flags, slight delay on triggering downhill from half-turn, needs to play the ball over his shoulder better, some issues locating the football, needs to finish more plays with interceptions, lacks acceleration to match and tackle some YAC threats
Overview: Revel has special teams experience on the kick coverage, punt return, punt coverage, and field goal block units and blocked multiple field goals in 2023. He possesses the ideal combination of size and length for an outside cornerback. His speed should meet league thresholds, even if it isn’t the best match on downfield routes against true burners and sometimes leads to him being stacked. Revel’s hips are smooth and fluid despite his high-cut frame. He operates on the boundary for East Carolina. His punches in press coverage re-route receivers and drive them toward the sideline, but he experiences his fair share of whiffs. The fifth-year senior’s footwork is poised and patient in press coverage. He compresses outside releases along the sideline out of hard and soft-shoe press. Revel makes the sudden transition from press to his half-turn without noticeable stiffness. His quick feet help him decelerate and stick with the receiver on comebacks and curls. However, the North Carolina native sometimes gets grabby on these routes or allows some separation against smaller receivers. Revel plays an aggressive style to allow limited separation, but his hand fighting could draw more flags in the NFL. He reads the quarterback’s eyes to anticipate and jump routes. Revel’s closing burst is impressive and helps him undercut throwing lanes or limit yardage after the catch. There’s a slight delay in his downhill trigger out of his half-turn, but he’s usually quick to close on routes that break in front of him. Revel’s recognition skills shine in these situations when he can diagnose plays and close from zone or off-man. The All-AAC selection easily processes switch releases in zone and has the awareness to drop and take away developing deep crossers. He boxes out receivers at the catch point and makes the most of his vertical leap and large catch radius to impact throws. Revel prefers to turn around and face the line of scrimmage to play the ball instead of playing it over his shoulder or in a half-turn. He must become more comfortable playing the ball with his back to the line of scrimmage and convert more PBUs into turnovers. He struggles to locate the ball at times but recovers by raking the receiver’s hands late in the play. Revel is a willing run defender and powerful tackler with a great motor. He uses his long arms to stack and shed blocks and deploys several techniques to defeat blockers.
Overall, Revel checks all of the boxes as a physical cornerback with the football IQ and athletic traits to be a starter at the next level. He still needs to refine his hand placement in press coverage and convert more pass breakups with interceptions. Revel is a scheme-diverse corner with the measurables and strength to jam and the awareness and closing speed to play zone.
