Ranking the 2022 NFL Draft's top 60 EDGE Rushers- Final
This is the third time I've ranked the top edge rushers in this historically deep class
It’s finally the day of the 2022 NFL Draft. We’re crossing the finish line at the last minute, but I’ve completed a list of the top 60 edge prospects in this historically deep class. I believe this edge class has the potential to rival what we saw in the 2011 NFL Draft (six players with 95 sacks or more). I gave five of the following prospects first-round grades and 20 of them received top 100 evaluations.
The 2022 NFL Draft doesn’t feature as many blue-chip prospects as its predecessors, but this is a deep class that arguably has the most “draftable” prospects we’ve seen in the past decade. Click here to see my full top 400 big board, where I attempt to rank every prospect who will be drafted.
For the sake of this exercise, I’m classifying Zachary Carter, Logan Hall, DeMarvin Leal, LaBryan Ray, Demetrius Taylor, and Alex Wright as edge defenders and James Houston as a linebacker.
I provided in-depth profiles for the top 20 prospects in this article, including comments on their physical measurements, production, and traits. I’m planning on adding those details for the remaining edge rushers in the top 30 throughout today. Edge rushers after 30 will only have a few insights based on what I could easily access.
All statistics are from College Football Reference when possible. Statistics for most FCS prospects come from their program’s official website.

Tier 1- Top Ten Selections
1. Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE Michigan
Size: 6'7", 260 lbs. with 32 1/8" arms
Pros: Three-cone (6.73) ranked in the 99th percentile, ideal bend and explosiveness in his lower body, wins the tackle’s inside and outside shoulders, finished third in the nation with 74 pressures (2021), missed tackles aren’t an issue, only penalized once in 2021, cooked an Ohio State offensive line filled with future NFL players for 15 pressures and three sacks (2021), converts speed to power, high motor, as good against the run as he is the pass, active hands, already has an arsenal of moves and counters
Cons: Arm length and wingspan are 11th percentile or lower, one season of top-end play, pursuit speed is average
Production: 62 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
2. Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE Oregon
Size: 6'4", 254 lbs. with 33 1/8" arms
Pros: Excellent pursuit speed, closing speed to make plays as a backside defender, consistent producer since his freshman season, insane get-off speed, explosive out of his stance, shows plenty of effort in pursuit, converts speed to power, sets the edge versus the run well for a 254 lb. player
Cons: I expected him to have more bend, 23 missed tackles in college, seven penalties in 2021, tool chest is largely empty in terms of pass rush moves and counters, needs to add some more muscle to his frame
Production: 49 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
Tier 2- Guaranteed First Round Picks
3. George Karlaftis, EDGE Purdue
Size: 6'4", 266 lbs. with 32 5/8" arms
Pros: Turned 21 in early April, consistent producer since his freshman season, combined 109 pressures in 2019 and 2021, built like a brick house, can reduce inside and work from several alignments, bull rusher, shocks linemen with his initial punch, doesn’t wear down as the game goes on, active hands are always working to create separation or establish a point for him to display his power, has the lower body strength to set the edge
Cons: Arm length and wingspan, 20 missed tackles in 26 games, surprising lack of production in the running game, didn’t record a pressure against Ohio State (2021), cornering and overall agility are average at best
Production: 39 tackles, ten tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
Production: 54 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2019
4. Jermaine Johnson II, EDGE Florida St.
Size: 6'5", 254 lbs. with 34" arms
Pros: Torched Senior Bowl competition, excellent hand counters, more bend than I expected, converts speed to power, bull rush capability, lightning quick get-off, missed tackles aren’t a problem, offers upside in pursuit, always consistently approached the run game, attacks lineman’s hands with a swipe move to get inside, bottles up run plays at the point of attack, swim move
Cons: Turned 23 in January, one season of high-end production, lacks elite bend, must maintain his pad level, hands could use some refinement, wasn’t dominant versus Ikem Ekwonu in 2021
Production: 70 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
5. Travon Walker, EDGE Georgia
Size: 6'5", 272 lbs. with 35 1/2" arms
Pros: Arm length, wingspan, and hands are all 95th percentile, historic Combine performance, has the size to reduce inside, alignment versatility, 6.89 three-cone, pursuit speed, asked to drop into coverage by Georgia, excellent closing speed versus the run, hands pack pop, sets the edge, bull rush strength, overall freak athlete who has all of the tools to build an arsenal
Cons: Limited snaps as a true edge rusher, lacks developed pass rush moves, raw ball of energy and athleticism, consistently missed tackles, not among the top 100 FBS pass rushers in pressures in 2021, one season with over 200 defensive snaps, many of his sacks were by chance, plays upright with questionable bend
Production: 33 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and six sacks in 2021
Tier 3- Top 50 Prospects
6. Arnold Ebiketie, EDGE Penn St.
Size: 6'2", 250 lbs. with 34 1/8" arms
Pros: Plus arm length and wingspan, ascent began at Temple in 2020, explosive off the line, excellent closing speed, dip and rip to get under a tackle’s outside shoulder, blocked two field goals in 2021, consistently won around the outside and flattened his rush, draws the tackle outside before attacking the inside shoulder, active and violent hands, motor runs hot
Cons: Turned 23 in January, seven missed tackles and two penalties in each of the past two seasons, hope he can add more weight, gets overwhelmed at the point of attack sometimes, edge setting is dependent on who is blocking him, needs to add more pass rushing moves
Production: 62 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
7. David Ojabo, EDGE Michigan
Size: 6'4", 250 lbs. with 33 1/2" arms
Pros: Has a nose for attacking the football, loose athlete, doesn’t slow down when coming off the edge, fakes inside then bolts around the edge, springy get-off, spin move to threaten inside shoulder, flattens his rush with excellent bend, fluid athlete who redirects with ease, creative pass rusher, closing speed is eye-opening
Cons: Tore his Achilles at Michigan’s pro day, will likely miss most if not all of 2021, high missed tackle rate, one season with more than 30 defensive snaps, week-to-week production was inconsistent, still a lot to learn (began playing football as a high school junior), displaced in the running game too easily, needs to either add mass or become more savvy to handle run duties
Production: 35 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and five forced fumbles in 2021
8. Boye Mafe, EDGE Minnesota
Size: 6'4", 261 lbs. with 32 5/8" arms
Pros: Senior Bowl riser (eight pressures and multiple sacks in the game), explosive athlete with terrific linear speed, always keeps his eyes on the football, footwork sets up linemen for failure, ideal bend, carries his speed through his bend, redirects to the football, active hands and arms that attack the tackle’s hands
Cons: Turns 24 in November, arm length, one season with over 300 defensive snaps, never fully broke out in college, lacks dominant power at the point of attack, larger tackles move him in the running game, feels like he tries to avoid linemen rather than challenge them, pass rush arsenal is still developing
Production: 34 tackles, ten tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
9. Nik Bonitto, EDGE Oklahoma
Size: 6'3", 248 lbs. with 32 1/2" arms
Pros: Has put on weight in the pre-draft process to answer size concerns and still dominated the Combine’s speed testing, two years of elite pass rush production, 22.49% pressure rate in 2020 and 2021 combined, great snap anticipation and get-off, closing speed, will hover by the line until a lane opens and fly through it, beats tackles to their landmarks with ease, fluid and loose athlete, flattens his rush, spin move
Cons: Weight, arm length, and wingspan are all below average, 19 missed tackles in the past three years, questions about his ability to hold the edge, gets washed away by power tackles, play strength and anchor are below average
Production: 39 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
Production: 33 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and nine sacks in 2020
10. Drake Jackson, EDGE USC
Size: 6'3", 254 lbs. with 34" arms
Pros: Turned 21 in early April, bulked up in the pre-draft process (weighed 273 lbs. at his pro day and ran a 7.09 three-cone), explosive get-off, swats the tackle’s initial punch, adequate bend to flatten his rush, agility to redirect and maintain speed, loose athlete, blockers struggle getting a consistent hold on him, pursuit upside
Cons: Never put together an elite season, ends up on the ground more than you want, doesn’t always wrap with form tackles, anchor versus the run is suspect, pass rush moves and counters are limited, needs to start using his hands as weapons
Production: 37 tackles, eight tackles for loss, five sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
Production: 46 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2019
Tier 4- The Day 2 Tweeners
11. Logan Hall, EDGE Houston
Size: 6'6", 283 lbs. with 32 3/4" arms
Pros: Showcased swim and spin moves at the Senior Bowl, bull rush capability, 7.25 three-cone is excellent for his build, rarely misses tackles, splits interior offensive linemen, upper body strength to shrug off blocks, shows effort in pursuit, heavy hands, loves attacking the inside shoulder of guards or tackles
Cons: Arm length and wingspan, tweener build that’s too small for a defensive tackle but not bendy enough for an edge, penalized three times in 2021, not bendy, inconsistent pad level, double teams will send him backward
Production: 47 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and six sacks in 2021
12. DeMarvin Leal, EDGE Texas A&M
Size: 6'4", 290 lbs. with 33 1/4" arms
Pros: Spin move to attack the inside shoulder, redirects well to separate from blocks, some instances of winning the edge at his size, alignment versatility, heavy hands, knows how to get offensive linemen off balance and dump them, disengages from blocks easily when the ball carrier moves
Cons: Tweener build that lacks the mass of a defensive tackle and the versatility of an edge rusher, ten missed tackles and five penalties in 2021, significant decline in production and efficiency from 2020 to 2021, not a twitchy or sudden player, bull rush dies out as his pads rise
Production: 58 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
Tier 5- Top of Round Three
13. Kingsley Enagbare, EDGE South Carolina
Size: 6'4", 258 lbs. with 34 3/4" arms
Pros: Enormous arms (87th percentile) that he uses as a primary weapon, stick his hand on the tackle’s chest and drives him backward, enough power to bull rush, some signs of flattening his rush, actively swats away the tackle’s hands, cut down on the missed tackles in 2021, drives tight ends with ease, speed to make plays as the weakside defender on runs, significant improvement in hand/arm power over the past two years
Cons: Lacks high-end bend and cornering ability, committed 15 penalties in four seasons, got knocked off his spot by Georgia’s power run game several times (2021), lacks twitch, agility is subpar for a player his size
Production: 44 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
14. Cameron Thomas, EDGE San Diego St.
Size: 6'4", 267 lbs. with 32 1/2" arms
Pros: His 77 pressures only trailed Will Anderson’s total in 2021, consistent producer since 2019, at least 300 snaps working the A gap, B gap, over the tackle, and outside the tackle, reduces inside frequently, swim move to attack the inside shoulder, speed in space is underrated, closing speed, gets skinny in gaps, flows down the line to the ball, gets consistent movement off his drive
Cons: Arm length and wingspan, 23 missed tackles in the past three years, six penalties in 2021, pad level, lacks bend, doesn’t have exciting get-off, slows down significantly when battling contact
Production: 71 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
15. Josh Paschal, EDGE Kentucky
Size: 6'3", 268 lbs. with 32 3/4" arms
Pros: Massive decline in missed tackles this year, not penalized in 2021, size to play in multiple alignments, closing speed catches offenses off guard, consistently blew up run plays, sets the edge and anchors, very fluid athlete at his size possessing above average lower body bend, active hands, impressive first step
Cons: Arm length and wingspan, gets stuck on blockers more often than you want, agility is limited, very few instances of him turning the corner, limited elusiveness when trying to avoid the blocker
Production: 52 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, five sacks, and one forced fumble in 2021
Tier 6- Late Third Round Evaluations
16. Myjai Sanders, EDGE Cincinnati
Size: 6'5", 247 lbs. with 32 5/8" arms (Pro Day Weight)
Pros: Converts speed to power, explosive first step, capable of making plays in the running game as a backside defender, spin move, pursuit speed is much better than his 40-time, sixth-most pressures in the country this past year (62), back-to-back years with elite pass rush production, ten pressures against Alabama (2021), creates movement against tight ends, hands and feet are always active, sets up the tackle with varied tempo
Cons: Turns 24 in July, weight fluctuation at the Combine (228 lbs.) raised concerns when teams were already worried about him maintaining weight, arm length, 24 missed tackles in the past two years, 20 penalties in the past two years, lean build, power run plays to his side will be difficult to manage
Production: 41 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 2021
Production: 31 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks in 2020
17. Sam Williams, EDGE Ole Miss
Size: 6'4", 261 lbs. with 33 1/8" arms
Pros: One of nine players with more than 60 pressures last year, 4.46 40-time at his size (98th percentile), making a habit of stripping the ball, relentless pursuit of the quarterback, explosive get-off, motor runs hot, adequate bend to turn the corner, one of the best athletes in this edge class, violent hands
Cons: Turned 23 in March, arrested for sexual battery in 2020 but the charges were dropped, missed tackles aren’t a huge problem but they exist, nine penalties in 2021, doesn’t show as much interest in the running game, struggles to identify run fits, several instances where he failed to finish potentially big plays
Production: 57 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles in 2021
18. Alex Wright, EDGE UAB

Pros: Solid arm length but an excellent wingspan, cut down on missed tackles in 2021, some ability to reduce inside, has a swim move for tackles or guards, excellent acceleration for his size, good get-off helped by anticipation, uses feet and shoulders to sell an out-fake before attacking the inside shoulder, impressive bend at his size, active hands combined with his length creates opportunities, loose athlete with ideal lower body mobility
Cons: Production diminished against Georgia (2021) and BYU (2021), one season of elite production, three penalties in 2021, lacks the strength to play inside consistently, instances of playing too upright, needs a few more pass rush moves, should add more muscle to his frame
Production: 45 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, and two forced fumbles in 2021
19. Dominique Robinson, EDGE Miami (OH)
Size: 6'5", 253 lbs. with 33 1/4" arms

Cons: Turns 24 in July, only one season with over 150 defensive snaps, pedestrian production despite competition level, still very new to the position (began playing edge in 2019), still building up his play strength, limited pass rush moves, gets pushed back in the running game, takes his pass rush arc too high and ends up too far behind the quarterback
Production: 28 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks in 2021
20. DeAngelo Malone, EDGE Western Kentucky
Size: 6'3", 243 lbs. with 33 1/8" arms
Pros: Four consecutive years with at least 690 defensive snaps, 25 sacks and 48.5 tackles for loss in the past three years, rarely missed tackles in 2021, four years of consistent production, high effort in pursuit leads to plays downfield, get-off and bend to quickly beat a tackle, springy athlete capable of mirroring a scrambling quarterback, agility allows him to redirect
Cons: Production peaked in 2019, playing weight and strength, will struggle against power blockers, doesn’t consistently create backward movement in linemen, hand usage is inconsistent
Production: 94 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and four forced fumbles in 2021
Production: 99 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks in 2019
