Ranking the 2022 NFL Draft's top 50 cornerbacks
Get an overview of the whole rookie cornerback class we'll see next season
In November, I had the grandiose idea of doing multiple top 50 rankings for each position group in the 2022 NFL Draft. The draft is roughly three weeks away, edge rusher is the only position I’ve covered, and the last installment of that list came out in December. You could say I fell flat on my face with this one, but I plan on releasing as much information as I can through rankings in the next few weeks.
These are incomplete player profiles largely dominated by official measurements, statistics, and a few thoughts regarding the roles various prospects could play at the next level. I apologize for not having complete write-ups, but there’s no time left for that.
Feel free to tell me in the comments or on Twitter @Sam_Teets33 if you believe a certain prospect should rank higher. Let me know if I missed anyone.

Tier 1- Locked-In First Round Selections
1. Ahmad Gardner, CB Cincinnati
Scheme: Zone with frequent press man
Size: 6'3", 190 lbs. with 33 1/2" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Three interceptions in each season, never allowed a touchdown in college, answered questions about his deep speed at the Combine, height, arm length, and wingspan are all 95th percentile or higher, cut down on penalties in 2021, excellent acceleration and leg drive, fairly loose lower body, master of the press, eliminated half the field routinely, competitive in the running game, usually stays low in his transitions
Cons: Large build to only weigh 190 lbs., history of penalties for being overly physical, a little high-hipped, doesn’t tackle with force
Production: 40 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions, and four passes defensed in 2021
-Didn’t allow more than 18 yards in a game this past season
-Allowed 122 yards on 18 receptions (6.8 yards per catch) in 2021
-Cut penalties from seven in 550 snaps in 2020 to two in 970 snaps in 2021
2. Derek Stingley Jr., CB LSU
Scheme: Scheme versatile
Size: 6'0", 190 lbs. with 30 5/8" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Turns 21 in June, arguably the best freshman season at corner ever, scheme transcendent, loose athlete with pattern matching capabilities, exceptional backpedal (low, smooth, quick feet, etc.), hips are completely unlocked, instincts were obvious in 2019, drives on underneath throws, has the burst to jump routes
Cons: Underwent surgery for a Lisfranc injury in early October, played more games as a freshman (15) than he has over the past two years (ten), didn’t test as dominant as expected at pro day, arm length and wingspan are below the 25th percentile, focus waned in 2021, questions about his tackling, not a downhill thumper
Production: Eight tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble in 2021
Production: 38 tackles, one tackle for loss, six interceptions, and 15 passes defensed in 2019
-Allowed 34 receptions on 92 targets as a freshman
-Allowed no receptions or one reception or for under 15 yards against Clemson, Mississippi St., Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas, and Texas A&M in 2019
3. Trent McDuffie, CB Washington
Scheme: Zone and off-man
Size: 5'11", 193 lbs. with 29 3/4" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Four penalties committed in roughly 1,700 defensive snaps, hasn’t surrendered a touchdown since 2019, elite tackle finisher despite arm length, motor runs hot, eager to contribute in run defense, won’t be bumped around by bigger players, closing speed to challenge at the catch point, tremendous understanding of zones and angles
Cons: Arm length and wingspan are below the tenth percentile, might find himself confined to the slot, not going to operate in a man-heavy system, lacks measurements for press, speed receivers with height are his enemy, limited to no slot experience
Production: 35 tackles, four tackles for loss, and six passes defensed in 2021
-Allowed ten yards per reception in 2019, 8.7 in 2020, and 6.9 in 2021
-Nine games in 2021 with two or fewer receptions allowed for under 20 yards
Tier 2- Late First/Early Second
4. Andrew Booth Jr., CB Clemson
Scheme: Man coverage, can play zone
Size: 6'0", 194 lbs. with 31 1/2" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Only one penalty committed in college (2020), competitive tackler, had an incredible tackle at Georgia (2021) on a wide receiver screen, elite ball tracking skills, loose athlete with pattern matching capabilities, twitchy playmaker, active feet and aggressive hands, stays low and light-footed in his backpedal, closing burst
Cons: Underwent surgery on core muscle in late March, injuries cost him the entire pre-draft process, still inexperienced and learning the position (under 1,000 snaps at corner), footwork becomes sloppy, flies in out of control leading to missed tackles, 11 missed tackles in 2021, looking to make a big play backfires, takes eye candy
Production: 37 tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions, and five passes defensed in 2021
-Allowed three receptions on four targets for one yard against Georgia (2021)
5. Roger McCreary, CB Auburn
Scheme: Man coverage, plenty of press, possible slot
Size: 5'11", 190 lbs. with 28 7/8" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Clear improvement each season, battle tested with 2,205 defensive snaps, was heavily targeted but held his own against Alabama (2021), fluid footwork, sticks on the receiver’s hip, signs of patter-matching, missed tackles haven’t been a significant issue, twitchy agility to stick with creative release packages, experienced in press
Cons: First percentile or lower in arm length and wingspan, size limitations might relegate him to the slot, big slots could take advantage of his size, slow to dig in and drive downhill, limited slot experience, some tightness in his hips
Production: 49 tackles, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed, one defensive touchdown, and one fumble recovered
-Allowed seven receptions on 18 targets against Alabama (2021)
-Pro Football Focus’ highest-graded cornerback at the FBS level in 2021 (minimum 100 snaps)
6. Kaiir Elam, CB Florida
Scheme: Zone, some press
Size: 6'1 1/2", 191 lbs. with 30 7/8" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Turns 21 in May, answered speed questions at the Combine (4.39 40-time), underrated recovery speed, wingspan is better than arm length, some experience working in the slot, cut down on missed tackles in 2021, battles at the catch point, looked more interested in stopping the run in 2021, appeared on NFL radars as a freshman
Cons: Eleven penalties committed over the past two years, arm length is only 30th percentile, 13 missed tackles in 2021, was going through the motions some games (Samford in 2021), not twitchy, sometimes loses track of the wide receiver when his back is turned, instances of getting stacked
Production: 29 tackles, one interception, and five passes defensed in 2021
Production: 39 tackles, two interceptions, 11 passes defensed, and one fumble recovered in 2020
-Allowed two receptions on seven targets against Alabama (2021)
7. Kyler Gordon, CB Washington
Scheme: Zone, experiment with man
Size: 5'11 1/2", 194 lbs. with 31" arms (NFL.com)
Pros: Never allowed a touchdown in college, split time between slot and outside in 2020 and 2021, special teams experience, one penalty in the past two years, willing participant in run defense, acceleration to drive on and jump routes, explosive when he drives on a route, doesn’t appear to have anything limiting his fluidity, length wasn’t a problem when contesting catches
Cons: Wingspan and arm length, only one full season of starting-caliber snaps, shoulder tackler, still developing his technique and instincts, will likely face targets early and often in the NFL
Production: 45 tackles, two tackles for loss, two interceptions, seven passes defensed, and one forced fumble in 2021
-Higher PFF grades than teammate Trent McDuffie in five games of the 11 games they played together in 2021

Pros: Clocked at 21.75 MPH at the Senior Bowl, stays low in his backpedal despite his size, elite arm length for press coverage and causing problems at the catch point, smothered receivers in college, has recovery speed, arm length should help him defeat blocks, surprising agility for a player with his size
Cons: Competition level, several drops at the Combine, not a natural hands catcher, below-average 40-time, footwork needs to be cleaned up, technique not fully developed at school, needs to add ten more pounds of muscle, wish he was a more eager run defender, speed is more build up than sudden
