Pros: Appears to have long arms, explosive when he times the snap well, fits hands into the tackle’s chest, good hand placement, able to cross the tackle’s face, attacks inside rush lanes, punishes tackles that overset, pries open the B-gap, long strider, gets vertical quickly, pushes vertically before countering inside with a spin, nice pull through on his spin move, spin move, long-arm move, learning to convert speed to power, chop, snatch-pull through, flashes of impressive bend, gets low to dip under and around the tackle, long arms and hand placement to separate from and shed blocks, quick to redirect to the ball when he bounces off blocks in the run game, good pursuit speed to the boundary, tackle radius, improving nose for the football in the run game, speed to make plays as a backside run defender, consecutive run stops against Georgia showing off his quickness (2023), Georgia made the mistake of leaving him unblocked too many times (2023)
Cons: Limited special teams experience, lean frame, a little high-hipped, inconsistent first step, pad level should be lower, can’t revive rush plan once it dies, power rushes die out, pass rush plan must diversify, limited hand counters, bend falls short of elite, can be overpowered and pancaked by linemen working downhill, ended up on the ground a lot vs. Tennessee (2022), washed away by down blocks, sealed inside or out in the run game, stacking and shedding still needs work, sometimes leaves his gap while trying to duck around a block, slides off tackle attempts
Overview: Umanmielen is primarily a 5-tech for the Gators who gets some snaps working as a wide 9 rusher. He appears to have excellent arm length and explosive get-off when he times the snap well. Umanmielen fires his hands into the tackle’s chest with good placement. When he doesn’t engage his hands immediately, he showcases the agility and burst to cross the tackle’s face and attack inside rush lanes. Tackles can’t afford to overset against him. Umanmielen is a long strider who gets vertical quickly to win the outside track. He often stems his rush vertically before executing an excellent inside spin that’s finished with a nice pull through. His other pass rush moves include a long-arm move, classic chop, and snatch-pull through. Umanmielen is learning to convert speed to power. He has good bend and dips low to get under tackles when working around the edge. The fourth-year junior has the long arms and hand placement to separate from and shed blocks. He quickly redirects to the ball when he bounces off blocks in the run game and has the pursuit speed and tackle radius to chase down ball carriers. His speed also makes him a threat as a backside run defender. Umanmielen made strides in run defense from 2022 to 2023. He produced consecutive run stops against Georgia (2023) at the 7:37 and 7:01 marks in the first quarter and made the Bulldogs pay for leaving him unblocked so often. However, the former four-star recruit still needs to sharpen his run defense skills. He ends up on the ground too much and can be overpowered by linemen working downhill. Umanmielen sometimes leaves his gap and ends up opening running lanes or getting sealed. His power to hold the point of attack is questionable, and he slides off tackles as running backs fly through gaps. He is washed away by down blocks and doesn’t stack and shed consistently yet. Umanmielen’s frame is lean, and he’s a little high-hipped. His first step and timing of the snap are inconsistent, and his pad level gets too high too quickly off the snap. Umanmielen struggles to revive his pass rush plan once it dies. His power rushes still die out when he tries to play directly through the lineman’s frame. Umanmielen lacks a deep bag of pass rush moves and needs to diversify his rush plan.
Overall, Umanmielen is a developing explosive pass rusher with long arms and a great spin move. He has shown significant improvement in run defense in 2023 but is still limited against offensive linemen moving downhill. Umanmielen hasn’t come close to his potential yet. The team that drafts him is buying into his ceiling two years down the line.
