Marvin Mims, WR Oklahoma: 2023 NFL Draft Profile
Classification: Junior slot receiver from Frisco, Texas
Background: Mims was a four-star recruit from Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas in the class of 2020. He was the No. 168 recruit according to 247Sports, No. 248 for Rivals, and No. 148 for On3.com. ESPN ranked him 161st in the nation with an 83 grade out of 100. Mims broke onto the scene as a high school sophomore. That year, he produced 52 receptions for 1,290 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 games. He followed up with 49 receptions for 912 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games as a junior and 114 receptions for 2,626 yards and 31 touchdowns in 14 games as a senior. Mims also played basketball in high school. He averaged double-digit points per game as a sophomore and junior. He originally committed to the Stanford Cardinals before switching to Oklahoma.
2021 Production: 13 games, 32 receptions, 705 yards, 5 touchdowns + 10 punt returns, 69 yards
2020 Production: 11 games, 37 receptions, 610 yards, 9 touchdowns + 13 punt returns, 162 yards
Injuries & Off-Field: N/A
Awards: 2020 Freshman All-America, 2020 Second-Team All-Big 12, 2021 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention, 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team
Pros: Experienced on special teams, exposed to snaps in the slot and out wide, drops and fumbles weren’t a problem in 2021, feisty blocker, varies release tempo, quick athlete with low center of gravity, speed to threaten defenses vertically, has taken some heavy hits over the middle but always pops right back up, patient route runner, great combination of speed and acceleration, willing to battle through contact during the route, wins at all three levels, quick off the line, ball tracking, gets to his top speed quickly, route running skills
Cons: Rarely makes defenders miss tackles, underperforms in contested catch situations, small and slim frame, catch radius, arm length, feisty blocker but lacks technique, mass, and awareness to consistently contribute in this area, sometimes tries to run before he secures the reception, most contact brings him down, struggled to create separation when engaged by Kaiir Elam (2020), will struggle against press coverage in the NFL, has high-end speed but it’s not truly elite, not very elusive, limited twitch
Overview: Mims is unofficially listed at 5'11", 179 lbs. Despite his small frame, the Texas native never hesitates to get physical with defenders. He’s quick to jump on defensive backs as a blocker and survives big hits over the middle of the field. Mims possesses excellent speed, although I wouldn’t call him an elite burner. His route running is impressive and leads to natural separation. He shows good patience when looking for the right time to slam the accelerator. Mims’ film includes some drops against Texas Tech (2020) and a bobble against Tulane (2021), but he has some of the best hands in this class.
Overall, Mims is a smooth athlete with the burst and top speed to blow by defenders for instant access to all three levels of the field. However, his size leads him vulnerable to press coverage and long-armed corners. He’ll have to play in the slot at the NFL level to avoid getting jammed at the line.
