Injuries & Off-Field: Missed three games in his final high school season
Awards: N/A
Pros: Special teams experience on the kick return, punt return, and field goal block units, good arm length, enough mass to occasionally reduce inside, guards struggle to match his twitch, explosive athlete, acceleration and speed make him a natural weapon on stunts, hammers guards on stunts, relentless pursuit of the quarterback, mixes rush tempo, fierce hand usage, lightning fast strikes, powerful chops to defeat the tackle’s hands, hand quickness on swipes, powerful two-handed swipe is disruptive, long-arm move, drives impressive power through a long-arm, rip move, club-rip, rip counter off bull rush, very polished swipe-rip, inside swim, steady and powerful leg drive, leg drive to gradually walk offensive tackles into the pocket, punishes oversetting tackles by attacking B-gap with explosiveness, lowers pad level at top of the arc, inside spin counter after working vertically, powerful extensions to keep linemen out of his frame, swim move leads to instant penetration vs. the run, pulls blockers forward and off balance in the run game, arm length and ferocious upper body movement help separate from run blocks, quick to stack and shed tight end blocks, stacks solo run blocks with powerful base, threat as a backside run defender
Cons: High-cut frame, some snaps late off the line, struggles to reignite rush when o-lineman lands heavy punch early in the play, lacks significant bend in hips, driven up and around the pocket by tackles that mirror his speed, pass rush plan needs to expand, wins with overwhelming athletic advantage – could be in for wake up call in the NFL, hands are active but unrefined, hand placement on long-arm move slips upward, lacks size to challenge double teams, gets pinned down to create off-tackle run lanes, gets swept up in the mass of bodies on inside zone runs, over pursues in run defense, dives and misses some tackles, slides off arm tackles
Overview: Overton primarily aligns as a 4 and 5-tech for the Crimson Tide but also takes a few snaps at 3-tech. His build has the mass and play strength to continue taking snaps reduced inside, where he uses his athletic advantage over guards to generate pressures. Overton’s arm length surpasses the league’s thresholds. He’s an explosive athlete with a terrific combination of acceleration and power. The junior varies his rush tempo and uses violent, fast hands to attack offensive linemen. His pass rush plan includes chops, two-handed swipes, long-arms, rips, club-rips, swipe-rips, swims, and rip counters off his bull rush. Overton drives impressive power through his arms on bull rushes and uses his steady leg drive to walk linemen back into the pocket. He punishes offensive tackles that overset by attacking the B-gap with his burst. Overton’s high-cut frame limits his bend at the top of the arc, but he still manages to lower his pad level to try to play under the lineman’s hands. Agile offensive tackles mirror Overton up the arc and drive him around the pocket. He sometimes avoids losing this way by using an inside spin counter. The former five-star recruit relentlessly pursues the quarterback, which matches his ferocious but sometimes wild and uncontrolled playstyle. He needs to anticipate the snap better. There are too many plays when he’s late off the line. Overton knows a good number of pass rush moves and combinations, but his down-to-down pass rush plan lacks polish. He relies heavily on winning with his athletic advantage, which could lead to struggles early in his NFL career. Overton struggles to reignite his pass rush when the offensive lineman gets access to his frame and lands a punch early in the play. His hands are hyperactive and powerful but mostly unrefined. In the run game, Overton uses powerful extensions to keep his frame clean. He penetrates using swim moves or pulling blockers forward and off balance. The Georgia native uses his length and aggressive hands to separate from blocks. He establishes a wide base to stack single blockers before surveying the backfield and shedding the lineman. Offenses frequently find success pinning him to create off-tackle running lanes. Overton sometimes gets lost and loses his anchor when operating in a crowd. He over pursues the football and misses or slides off diving tackle attempts.
Overall, Overton is an impressive athlete with ferocious hand usage and a strong pass rush foundation. He’s still rough around the edges but provides three-down value, some positional versatility, and early career starting upside at the next level.
