Jaren Hall, QB BYU: Offseason 2023 NFL Draft Profile
Hall was a three-star recruit from Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah in the class of 2016
BYU’s Jaren Hall is one of the most dynamic quarterbacks eligible for the 2023 NFL Draft. He needs to prove that he can stay healthy and string together multiple high-end seasons as a collegiate starter. The Cougars have several tough matchups this year, including games against Baylor, Notre Dame, Oregon, and Stanford. Those games give Hall the perfect chance to elevate his draft stock.

Background: Hall was a three-star recruit from Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah in the class of 2016. He was the No. 722 recruit according to 247Sports and No. 601 for On3.com. 2019 Production: 7 games, 46 attempts, 31 completions, 410 yards, 1 touchdown + 29 carries, 139 yards, 3 touchdowns
2018 Production: 2 games (Redshirt Year)
Injuries & Off-Field: Suffered two concussions in 2019, missed 2020 with a hip injury, missed two games for cracked ribs and one with a foot injury in 2021
Awards: 2021 First Team All-Independent (Pro Football Network), 2021 Independent Quarterback of the Year (Pro Football Network)
Pros: Active footwork in the pocket, mobility makes him a threat to escape and extend plays, has the speed and athleticism to make defenses pay for leaving him open grass, puts impressive zip on the ball to drive it through small windows, launched a bomb over 50 yards downfield against Utah (2021), baseball arm talent is apparent, he can probably make any throw asked of him, doesn’t drop his head too soon and scramble, remains disciplined and searching for options downfield as he extends plays, varies his release angle, comfortable throwing on the run and creating off platform, throwing motion looks very clean on the run, quick release and very little wasted movement in his throwing motion, keeps plays alive at a high level, displays some burst as a runner, puts ideal touch on downfield throws
Cons: Age, one year as a full-time starter, injury history, six fumbles in 2021, on the smaller side for a quarterback, learned some bad habits about holding the football too long behind BYU’s offensive line, his post-snap progressions need to happen faster (especially if he’s drafted early by a bad NFL team), he attempted some throws through windows and into double coverage that won’t work in the NFL, ball placement comes and goes, occasionally sails throws, size and playing style will add to concerns about his durability, not as advanced pre-snap as you would hope for a player his age but he’s only started one full season
Overview: Hall is unofficially listed at 6'1", 205 lbs. The former college baseball player will be one of if not the oldest prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft. Despite his age, Hall only has one season as a full-time starter under his belt. Injuries limited the Utah native over the past few years. Concussions robbed him of the chance to compete for snaps in 2019, a hip injury ended his 2020 season before it began, and further complications led to him missing time in 2021. Aside from the injuries, Hall is a dynamic and explosive quarterback. His mobility and speed lead to big runs, but he primarily focuses on extending plays and working to find wide receivers downfield. Hall’s baseball arm allows him to drive the ball with velocity, and he has the strength to make plays downfield. He’s the ultimate creative quarterback, varying his throwing angles, launching off platform, and completing passes on the run. However, Hall still needs to refine his pre-snap and post-snap processing, especially with an eye toward processing speed. There were occasional overthrows on Hall’s tape, and the comfort afforded to him by BYU’s offensive line likely won’t translate to the next level.
Overall, Hall’s creative, dynamic, and explosive skill set makes him a potential first round pick. He needs to prove he can remain healthy for a full season and show improvement in the mental areas of playing quarterback to lock up a top-32 selection. More experience will naturally help Hall refine his processing. Right now, I’m projecting him as an early Day 2 pick with late Day 1 upside.
