Before putting together my final first round mock for the 2025 NFL Draft later this week, I decided to go through the full seven-round exercise. I used my big board as a framework for parts of this process but also made some predictive decisions and experimented with some funky (and maybe dumb) trades and randomness to see if I could find something I liked.
Usually, I spend a full week putting together this annual seven-round mock draft in March. Unfortunately, losing myself in scouting reports, organizing the annual media collaboration (please read it, it’s really insightful), and a few major projects at my job combined to push this exercise back a month.
A week’s worth of work got crammed into ten hours between Friday night and Saturday. So, this seven-round mock draft isn’t as clear or well-thought out as in past years. I still liked a number of the fits and found the process insightful for picking out which crowded position groups might see players fall into the later rounds.
As with most seven-round drafts, the early rounds are more consistent while the late rounds tend to be more random and unpredictable. DO NOT READ TOO MUCH INTO THE LATE ROUNDS. For general purposes, focus on the top four rounds.
Several trends emerged that I think might cause some chaos throughout the draft, especially at certain stacked positions. Here are a few of the notable ones:
The sheer amount of nickel corners and slot receivers in this draft makes things very messy. Not enough teams need potential starting-caliber slot options on offense and defense this year to deplete these loaded positions. This will push a lot of talented mid-round prospects into the late rounds.
The running back market in the draft will consume itself. 23 running backs went in this mock draft, and that doesn’t include seven players that I have draft-able grades on. Even in the running back-by-committee era, there isn’t enough need for all of these worthy players to be selected.
Fifteen tight ends went in this mock. For comparison, the league drafted 12 in 2024, 15 in the historically deep 2023 class, and 19 (for some reason) in 2022. The problem I found was that the influx of tight ends over the past few drafts has dramatically limited how many teams need a TE1 or TE2. This led to several quality tight ends reaching late Day 3.
The cornerback pool dries up quickly. There’s a nice pocket in the second round, and you feel good about some of the late third to early fourth round options. After that, good luck. If you have a short list of corners you’re interested in, go get one immediately. We could see a run on corners that wipes the board clean.
This defensive tackle/nose tackle class is so deep that you can find quality, rosterable prospects into the late rounds.
A few things organically unfolded in this seven-round mock draft that I don’t envision happening this coming week. I’ve summarized them here:
The third tier of quarterbacks in this class (Max Brosmer, Dillon Gabriel, etc.) fell to the seventh round. Even with low ceilings and career backup projections, those players should go by at least the late fifth round.
Several of the linebackers that I have fourth round grades on fell into the fifth round, including Jeffrey Bassa, Barrett Carter, and Smael Mondon Jr. Seven linebackers went in that round, which just seems too congested to actually happen. I could see Bassa falling, but it’s unlikely all three of those linebackers make it out of the fourth round.
I sent Quinn Ewers to the Pittsburgh Steelers 83rd in this mock, but the further along I got into the process, the more I felt like I could’ve waited until 123rd to get Ewers in black and gold and just put Kaleb Johnson at 83rd.
T.J. Sanders got to 73rd, Kevin Winston Jr. went at 88th, and Kaleb Johnson went 93rd. You could hate those prospects and still acknowledge that those are unrealistic slides.
The Eagles only traded once in the mock. We know the Eagles will make at least half a dozen trades. They have the ammo to move up and down the board as they please. It’s just very tedious to line up a trade involving Philly’s four fifth round picks. I decided to mostly avoid Day 3 trades.
Some players who didn’t get drafted in the mock that I feel confident will be selected this year: LeQuint Allen (Syracuse), Connor Colby (Iowa), Da'Quan Felton (Virginia Tech), Drew Kendall (Boston College), Moliki Matavao (UCLA), Brashard Smith (SMU), Nazir Stackhouse (Georgia), and Marcus Yarns (Delaware). I could go either way with Willie Lampkin (North Carolina) because he’s such an outlier but is so technically developed.
